Travel Information: Kütahya - July 2008

Sample Expenses July '08

1$=1.20YTL : prices in YTL

Ottoman houses on Germiyan Sokak. Kütahya , Turkey

Accomodation:

Otel Yüksel in the center of town by the clock tower and vase fountain. It is recommended by both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide and it looked a lot better than the other hotel we glanced at (which had similar prices). Prices: 40 YTL (double with bath) and 25 YTL (double w/o bath). I think single with bath was 25. Prices go up in the winter. We found it clean and comfortable.

Transportion:
The bus station is on Ataturk Cad. which leads to the town center (5 minute walk). The train station is about 1 km from the center, along the street that bisects Ataturk Cad. and has the clock tower and park area in the middle.

Busses go to various locations including Istanbul, Konya, Afyon, Cappadocia, Antalya, and Izmir.

There are several small local busses which seem to zoom around frequently, although we found the town fairly walkable. Fare is 1 YTL.

Food:
Doy Doy Döner:

This place was recommended to us by a guy we met in a park. It is on Cumhuriet, the main pedestrian thoroughfare, and is very popular. A chicken döner sandwich in regular bread is 2 YTL while it is 2.50 in flat bread (durum) which has the added benefit of a nice spicey sauce (don't know if you can request this on a regular sandwich). Ayran is .50 YTL.

Mis Gözleme: 212-5103, on a side street (opposite Akbank) off of Cumhuriyet. Delicious gözleme for 1-2.50 YTL. The spinach one had nice fresh spinach and the Ege--tomato, cheese, potatoes (optional) was also really good.

Germiyan Konagi: Though the food is fairly standard, the atmosphere--a beautifully restored 18th century Ottoman house with various dining rooms including 2 Ottoman rooms with low tables and cushions--makes it worth it. They also have a cafe downstairs. Snacks (toast, omlettes, 2-4 YTL, mains 6-10 YTL.

Basak Bakery : Conveniently below/next to Otel Yuksel.

Siyah Inci: Open until midnight, the one on Cumhuriyet is the happening place in town in the evenings. Has a terrace and courtyard garden with live music. Desserts: 1.50-5, snacks/meals: 2-7.50, cappuchino: 3.50.

Money:
ATMs (Paramatiks) in the center next to clock tower and regular banks on Cumhuriet.

Sites:

The Kale: Ruins of a fortress on the hill. Take the street that goes by the Ulu mosque and walk up Hisarardi Sok.

Cinili Mosque : up hill from the center in a newer residential area, this striking mosque is covered with turquoise tiles.

Ceramics Workshops: The big factories are at the edge of town. But there are smaller workshops on Ertugrul Ezgi Sokak and Hamam Sokak. These specialize in hand-decorated ceramics.

Ottoman Houses: There are lots of Ottoman houses in desperate need of restoration about town but to see some beautifully restored ones, go to Germiyan Sokak (the side closest to Adnan Menderes Bulvar).
